I am new here as well - just getting started with the iPhone. Can anybody tell me what a little phone receiver above a keyboard means, just on the right upper side next to the battery icon.

then also, my iphone automatically uses GPS instead of WIFI - how can i get rid of that?

I thought you will be answered by this time. Unfortunately nobody did it.
however let me try.

Answer to the first question!
Tap Settings --> scroll down until you find 'Phone' then tap on 'Phone' symbol --> There you can find something named 'TTY' make it off, now you wont find the symbol next to the battery level on the top right corner.

answert to the Second question,
the reason you might switched of the wifi.
Tap settings --> Wifi --> On
This will solve your problem.

If you do not understand any of the above things let me know, I will try to expaling you with pictorial representation.

Thanks.
