As with most devices that will be handled quite a bit I'm sure Apple did extensive testing of it. It is designed with the idea that it will occasionally be dropped and would need to withstand the impact.

Unfortunately, the video didn't want to play for me. I am hoping the iphone turns out to be more durable than the ipod.

The guy in the video basically puts it in a bag with keys and shakes it. He then drops in on carpet, the floor and cement. He also takes a key and tries to scrape the glass but can't. It help up pretty well I must say except for a couple of scuffs from dropping it on the cement.
