It seems that users won't be able to install third-party apps on the iPhone

iPhone Will Not Allow User Installable Applications.
...
I got from the information coming out of the keynote was that the device would feature a full install of Mac OS X, and would run any and all desktop-based applications, as indicated by Apple asserting that the device "Runs OS X." You can imagine my surprise when while talking to the booth attendant I was informed that users will not actually be able to install any applications. This is a point of utter confusion with me. Why would Apple refer to the software running on the device as "OS X," when in reality, it will be running the long rumored stripped-down version of the operating system.

The inability for users to install additional applications of their choosing certainly makes me think again about my intentions to purchase the device...
Why?..

They use the excuse that it could interfere with the phone's functions... blah, blah, blah. What I think is there will be iPhone-ready software released straight from Apple at a later date, available for download/purchase, or something like that.

Just like their past actions, "Optional software available for purchase via iTunes bla bla bla". Am I not right?

Exactly, I have no doubt in my mind that this is how it will work. Apple could even go as far as having a program for sale that you buy and download that allows Apple extended hard drives to be installed in your iPhone. The possibilities for them are endless.

Then again Apple can't even release an official cover for the 30gb iPod, so maybe we shouldn't be too expectant.

Apple always likes to monoplize on what they are doing. Their business strategy is like that.

They don't have a lot of options when they only control 10% market share for computers; they have to monopolize somewhere.

But it is a share that has been slowly gaining since 1998 when the main guy Steve returned.

Apple's day will come, we will see.

No problem, Steve got kicked out on his ass from Apple a number of years ago, set up his own computer firm "NeXt", but by 1998 when Apple was dangerously near bankruptcy, they begged him to come back, and so he did.

The rest is history.
