Why put Skype on your iPhone

I read that people are putting skype on their iPhone, I wanted to know why you would want to do that to begin with. Would it really allow long distance calls for free?

Skype would be great to have on the phone, especially when using the wireless (not edge). You could make calls without affecting you overall minutes in plan.

Using the Internet via wi-fi to circumvent carrier restrictions

Attagirl,

I do not know if you have seen my posts regarding my frustration with my carrier in the USA (AT&T). I work in the boonies a lot and have to use my phone for business. However, I got called by AT&T and was told to seriously reduce my number of "out of network" phone calls or they would cancel my contract. Since I love my iPhone, contract cancellation was not an option for me at that time.

My short-term workaround has been to buy a pre-paid phone and throw it away when my project is completed in that geographic area.

However, I have discovered that iCall is now being ported to the iPhone and that will enable me to do what I need without using AT&T minutes in an "out of network" mode. As long as I have access to wi-fi, I will be able to make and receive phone calls. It looks like the iCall Pro version, which costs $4.95/month (billed in 3-month increments) will work best for me. However, they do have a free version as well.
