I heard they said no because Apple wanted to much control on the iPhone, and this was the case when Steve Jobs announced that the phone would be released at 6m on the 29th.. that was new and shocking news to the folks at AT&T...

Verizon

I was a Verizon customer for 9 years (up until 2 days ago :-)) and while I will say that their network coverage was excellent, Verizon as a company sucks.

1. Customer service is abhorant. (Keeping my fingers crossed on AT&T, but I'm also not that naive).
2. Verizon ALWAYS cripples their damn phones by replacing the manufacturer firmware with their own. And by doing this they disable any feature of the phone that would allow you to do something (anything) without going through their network and paying for it.
- Bluetooth file profile is disabled on any phone I've ever looked at (might be a few high-end smartphone packages that don't, but I don't know that for certain)
- No way to link your comp address book and calendar to the phone. At least not on my Razr once their firmware was there. I know others that have Cingular or tMobile have said that they could and it burned me every time I heard it.

Verizon most certainly told Apple 'no' because if they hadn't, you wouldn't be syncing with iTunes for data (and probably not for music and video either). And the iPhone would really have been a completely useless device.

More carriers would have been good, but Apple has a record of starting something on the high-end and more focused (limited?) and then expanding later. (First iPods were expensive, but eventually gave way to Mini's, then Nanos then Shuffles, etc...) I would be surprised if they don't have this planned with the iPhone.

Like I said, Verizon has/had a good network, but they never have customers in mind and I would LOVE to see them get a black eye over this.

Cheers!

Verizon is smart, they don't want to mix the problems of a dysfunctional phone with their service. Verizon is known as a dependable service provider, how bad would they look with a piece of crap IPhone. Plus, I really feel that Microsoft may try to expand their reach and bring in a competitor against the IPhone. Who knows, the ZunePhone? It's all possible, and this time around Verizon may not decline that offer.

Well...

Guess it was a matter of time til the Microsoft trolls chimed in with too much time on their hands.

If you clearly hate Apple products, why the hell would you be on a site called iPhoneChat unless you're purposely trying to be a tool? I work with M$ products every day and hate them, so the *last* place I would be is some Microsoft-anything board and wasting my time saying anything at all.

It think they most probably will, whether or not it will be any good is a matter of opinion. Personally, I think the Zune was a flop and I really am not interested in buying any more microsoft products.

I have heard that Palm are planning on bringing out a competitor to the iphone though, again, I will reserve judgement until it is actually released.

ipod's were/are too hot on the market. the iphone foundation has been built up for years. there will be nothing better until apple comes out with the iphone 2. im in New Jersey and all the stores in the area and Philly are still sold out of the 8gb iphone. the apple store around here gets daily shippments and can't keep them on the shelves.

and it sounds like someone in here really REALLY hates the iphone. Why? is it personal?

Getting away from the Verizon issue for a second .. I don't understand why you would hate the iphone that badly. I've used one and see nothing wrong with it. Sure, competitors may come out with a different phone. I see no need to trash apple though. They have 3 quality lines of products that are doing very well in the market today. I use Verizon and think they are a very good company, coming from ATT which was the worst company I've ever dealt with. The only reason I would ever switch would be for the iPhone, not for the quality of the company.

Not nesecarily. Yes, they are going to have a very strong hold on the market but that doesn't mean that nothing better will come out. Better doesn't always mean it's the most popular.
